Done well, a staycation is not a consolation prize. Most people walk past museums, neighborhoods, parks, and restaurants in their own area for years without going in. Treating home like a tourist destination (free walking tours, the touristy thing locals skip, the best view in town) delivers a real break without the cost or logistics of travel.
